Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The blue-and-gold macaw is a beautiful bird with a stunning visual appeal. Its social nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It also excels at interaction and is able to learn the language and tricks quickly.

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can become bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaged with them often enough. If not properly socialized, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential to establish clear boundaries to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they also make loving pets for children.

These birds can be very loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their roar.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once the birds' sex is known and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Lolita's Care

For years activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could stay for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and bond with their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

As is the case with any species of animal captive, a gold and blue macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and wish to see that she is released back into the wild. Since her captor does not have to divulge this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often a role in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of Seaquarium has stated his commitment to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be being reunited with her mother orca. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
