WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also boosts a random substat.

Upgraded gear generally sees greater value for trade regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or a very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less important for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item level upgrade upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used for the upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be used to create enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks, to ensure that your equipment is up-to-date.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to upgrade weapons, tools, armor, and accessories. They can be bought by players through NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the item upgrading's next upgrade level, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the slot of the item and the current item level upgrade level. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Item upgraders can be found in many places including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining a new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead, the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades require various methods which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was altered a bit, with numerous new features added. Once the player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level upgrade level, will cost less. This is even if the items come from a different set of gear.

The discount applies to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced too, but it is only available when certain milestones are reached.

Crests

Players have several choices when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are an item that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item upgrades level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be used to purchase equipment of a particular rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and easiest upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, based on the kind of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing tasks at the appropriate level. This could be by doing outdoor activities or completing dungeons and raids in all difficulty levels to obtain lower-tier gear or Mythic+ raid bosses or dungeons with heroic difficulty to obtain endgame gear. Crests can be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

Using these new currencies isn't too difficult however, the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. For instance, when an item is at the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to get their equipment to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. For instance, it's a good idea utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top equipment available and keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning on making. This is particularly relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill several slots. The discount for the entire account will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
