WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost in certain statistics. Each upgrade increases item upgrader mod level by +3. A random extra substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade item.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item upgrade has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as valuable for those with lower requirements due to the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any type of weapon or armor. However, the Item level upgrade used to upgrade will be consumed forever and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and is accessible at any time to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended to visit the upgrader every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the item level, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new gear. For instance, upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from another player will cost 105.

Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount and the chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no item upgrader available at the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades must be acquired through several methods, which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. When a player has an upgrade to a particular level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading further items to that level will be less expensive, even in the event that they are part of an entirely different set of gear.

This change is intended to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the top-quality equipment you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all slots are filled with top-quality equipment.
