How to Replace an Audi Car Key Holder G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, audi replacement audi car key key (Writeablog.net) I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly in the case of the Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of your audi key blade's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. If the sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is a typical part across the audi tt key 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
